Music is the other love of Koushik Sarkar and Hamesh, filmmakers behind Apostrophe. Their musical tastes run the gamut, from rock to jazz, world to electronica, and classical to new age. Combining their love for music with their skills as artists of the moving image, Apostrophe indulges in what they like to call Music Imagery - the capture and celebration of musical moments, experiences, people and cultures.
JOE SATRIANI IN CONCERT, INDIA 2005. 'FLYING IN A BLUE DREAM'.
The first offering from Apostrophe's Music Imagery is "Flying in a Blue Dream", an impulsive and inspired documentary of Joe Satriani's 2005 India Tour - where he played three venues - Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore - unofficial hubs of a Satriani cult that stretches from Kohima to Kerala, from Chandigarh to Chennai...
Kids in Kolkata, some still in elementary school, attend special guitar classes where they study maestros like Satriani. Musically inclined youngsters in Bangalore, when not writing code for software, spend hours hacking away at their Fenders, studying Satriani's technique... Such is the depth and diaspora of Joe Satriani's influence in India. "Flying in a Blue Dream" captures it all.
Candidly. A mesmeric 45 minute montage of dreamy and hypnotic Indiascape, live concert footage, fan interviews, backstage activity, impromptu video grabs from mobile phone cameras, and of course, bytes from Satriani himself, "Flying in a Blue Dream" is crisply edited and beautifully underscored by Satriani's music - a unique tribute by a couple of filmmakers, who love their music and pay tribute to their musical heroes the only way they know how - through the medium of the moving image.
